What does a steam trap do?
It makes a distinction: it discharges condensate (water) while keeping steam in the line. When this fails, either steam is wasted or water accumulates, reducing efficiency and risking water hammer.
How do I know if a steam trap has failed?
It shows at both extremes: stuck open means continuous steam escaping at the outlet; stuck closed means that section runs cold. Ultrasonic checking reveals either state without touching the line.
What causes water hammer in a steam line?
Almost always accumulated condensate that isn't being discharged — a failed trap, wrong slope, or insufficient drain points. Take it seriously; it damages the line and equipment.
